Product Description
David Travis, the Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago, is among the select few whose views on the subject are in focus and worth a close look. He has lived, breathed, and contemplated photographs for the past three decades and is among the small number of critics and writers whose knowledge of art, technique, and history (not to mention linguistics, mathematics, poetry, and philosophy) has enabled him to transcend the typical blather that surrounds photographs and get to the emotional, technical, and esthetic core of genius at work. In these seven essays, revised, rewritten, and expanded from his lectures, he presents his thoughts on a some of his favorite subjects: Weston, Stieglitz, Kertész, Brassaï, and Strand. His knowledge is such (often enriched by first-hand acquaintance) that he can, and does, discuss more than images or personalities; he understands what informs the work, from what milieu it derives, under what in?uences it matured, how it evolved, and how it succeeded. He is an art historian willing to venture far beyond the periphery of traditional academic fences; to discuss game theory (quite literally), the mathematics of G. H. Hardy, the poetry of Rimbaud, Valéry, Rilke, and Goethe, the philosophy of Nietzsche, the extravagance of Henry Miller.

Not since Szarkowsky s Looking at Photographs has so much singular and informed intelligence been brought to bear on this most recent of the fine arts. This is not so much a book of art criticism as a journey of philosophical inquiry. It is a text that completely understands the limitations, and potential glories, of the form within its wider context, celebrating the march of individual genius that has slowly, but inexorably, transformed a technical curiosity into an accepted art.

Product Description
Photographic images by artists of diverse cultural backgrounds further the understanding of contemporary immigration and the changing face of America in Tracing Cultures.
Themes central to the emerging definitions of multiculturalism are explored by recent photography and photo-related installation art that deals with issues of origin, acculturation, adjustment, displacement, and loss within the context of contemporary American life. Participating artists acknowledge that the melting pot ideal no longer suffices to describe their personal experience of cultural dislocation. Their art directly addresses the history and politics of American immigration in a country now obsessed with and, often fearful of, the notion of multiculturalism.
Artists represented include Albert Chong, Lewis deSoto, Shigeki Ito, Young Kim, Komar and Melamid, Dinh Q. Le, Gavin Lee, María Martnez-Cañas, Ruben Ortíz-Torres, Carrie Mae Weems, and Kim Yasuda.

Product Description
The young German Wilhelm von Gloeden – barely twenty-two – arrived in Taormina in1878 after a brief stop in Naples. He immediately became involved in photography; this new medium had fascinated him since his stepfather had given him a camera. This book features a collection of the pictures he took of the mythical landscapes around Vesuvius and Etna: the volcanoes on one side and the sea on the other, and, of course, the sun of the south. Also featured are many of his pastoral nude studies of Sicilian boys, which usually featured props such as wreaths or amphorae suggesting a setting in the Greece or Italy of antiquity. From a modern standpoint, his work stands out due to his controlled use of lighting as well as the elegant poses of his models.

His images of parks, lakes, shop windows, vendors, prostitutes, buildings, sculpture, and Paris street scenes go beyond documentation to a poetic vision of an era. Atget created some of the most beautifully articulated images of light and space ever made with a camera. Paperback, 8 x 8 in./96 pgs / 43 color.
